5 Must Buys 11/9/16

What up fellas.  Happy Monday.  Hopefully you guys got an extra hour of sleep with the time change. Unfortunately, it will now be dark on the way home from work now.  Looks like a lot of good books are coming out this week. Marvel is in the midst of their newest re-launch and DC continues with Rebirth.  Detective Comics and Flash are both strongly recommended, but didn't make the list this week. 

All-Star Batman #4 - 'My Own Worst Enemy' part four! So close and yet so far from his goal, Batman must now wrangle Two-Face out of his own assassin-filled riverboat casino before it plunges over Niagara Falls to their deaths! The Dark Knight will have to go all-in on the most deadly gamble of his life if he intends to make it out alive.

This has been my favorite Bat book stemming from the Rebirth, even though this isn't a Rebirth title. It almost feels like Quentin Tarantino decided to write a Batman comic book. It is action packed, very Dark and the KGBeast part was extremely graphic, but freaking amazing. This is definatly a book that beats to it's own drum.

Deathstroke #6 - The Professional' part six! Deathstroke's honor is put to the test when he must help a tyrannical despot - Ja Zaki, a.k.a. The Red Lion - stop a civil war that he inadvertently caused. Plus: Enter Jericho!

This book was a surprise for me. I like Deathstroke, but his books, a lot like Punisher end up being no story and just fighting/killing scenes. However, this book has started out with a great story and I am very excited to see where this goes. It has probably been the best solo Deathstroke book that I have read.

Glitterbomb #3 - 'I GAVE HIM A PIECE OF MY MIND...' Fan favorite JIM ZUB (WAYWARD, Thunderbolts) and newcomer DJIBRIL MORISSETTE-PHAN tear into the heart of Hollywood in GLITTERBOMB, a dramatic horror story about fame and failure.

This book took me by surprise. I almost didn't buy it, but was sure glad I did.  This is a dark tale where I don't consider the protagonist a bad person even though she does bad things. It seems like for the most part, people are getting what they deserved.  Please don't get me wrong killing is always wrong, but this is just entertainment.

Clone Conspiracy #2 -  The surprises keep coming in the SPIDER-MAN EVENT OF THE YEAR!Doc Ock is back and it's time for him and the Amazing Spider-Man to throw down! What lurks in the Underground?!

This has been the best Spider-man story in quite a long time.  Hopefully this wont get too crazy and convoluted, but so far so good.  This also has a chance to bring back Ben Reiley or Kaine as the Scarlet Spider, which I am very excited for. The other reason a lot of people have been excited for this is that Del Otto is doing the covers of this series and man, people love him.

Cannibal #2 - The second chapter from "New York Times" bestselling writer BRIAN BUCCELLATO & JENNIFER YOUNG. As the Hansen family reels from tragedy, Cash resorts to drastic measures in search of answers.

This is another book that is new, but has a lot of potential. This is a fresh take on zombies, but not really zombies.  I don't want to ruin it for anyone, but if you are a horror fan, this is a must check out.

Welcome back.  Here it is, the best day of the week, Wednesday, where all the new books come out and we have our entertainment for the week. As always there is a ton of great stuff coming out today. Here I point out the best covers that are coming out today. I know there are some people that buy books just for cover art or variants wouldn't be so popular.  I admit I am guilty of this, but there are always some really cool covers. The best is when they put grade A art on the covers of the regular book so you aren't spending a ton on a variant or pining for a cover that is way out of your price range. New No. 1's 11/2/16

What up muchahcos. Hope you guys had a great Halloween. This is a first time in a long time that there is nothing new from DC. They have a Catwoman Election Special, but that is a one shot. So we are now entering the Marvel NOW relaunch.  It is very odd how they are pushing some ancillary characters as part of their big launch like Prowler or this weeks Footkiller. I am hoping that they can turn it around soon. It almost feels like the height of the new 52 where I was picking up Batman and almost nothing else DC, but mostly Marvel just switched. I am only really enjoying the Spiderman books as well as Vision, which just ended, Moon Knight, Punisher and Doctor Strange. I can't wait for the X books that are slated to come out in the beginning of next year. So here we are the new books for this week.

 

W: Alex De Campi A: Tony Parker

If you read my posts, you know that I love Soviet spy books or alternative history Red Dawn type books. WOLVERINES! This one sounds like almost like that show the Americans, which I also enjoyed. I can't wait to read this one because the potential is there.

W: Mark Waid A: Mike Del Mundo

Avengers #1 - The time has come! Their ranks shattered by Civil War, their spirits weighted down by a toll both personal and spiritual, Earth's Mightiest Heroes must find the resolve to stand united one final time against their greatest foe! Captain America! Thor! The Vision! The Wasp! Spider-Man! Hercules! When the dust settles, not a one of these valiant heroes will make it to the final page alive! This is KANG WAR ONE.

What can I say about the Avengers that hasn't been said. This looks like a nice jumping on point and hopefully the return to relevance for Marvel.  What excites me for this book is that Mark Waid is writing it.

W: Max Bemis A: Dailbor Talajic

Footkiller #1 - Greg Salinger was just your typical merc for hire - FOOLKILLER - killing those that he deemed to be 'foolish.' And for money. But that life is behind him now. Today, he's a psychiatrist, trying to help others. But now S.H.I.E.L.D. wants him to try to rehabilitate super villains. The catch? If these 'patients' don't make enough progress, they're dead!

Again, just an odd choice as part of the new Marvel line up. An odd premise that sounds like, yeah that might be interesting. A $3.99 price point on this book is a maybe I will get this, but most likely not. 

W:David Walker A: Carlos Pacheco

I have loved Hawkeye ever since Matt Fraction David Aja did Hawk-Guy. It was the best archer story I have ever read.  I hope this bring Hawkeye back into the spotlight with some good stories about a non super powered hero.

W: Jason Aaron A: Olivier Coipel

Unworthy Thor #1 - Odinson's desperate search to regain his worthiness has taken him out into the cosmos, where he's learned of the existence of a mysterious other Mjolnir. This weapon of unimaginable power, a relic from a dead universe, is the key to Odinson's redemption, but some of the greatest villains of the Marvel Universe are now anxious to get their hands on it as well. Can The Odinson reclaim his honor, or will the power of thunder be wielded for evil? The quest for the hammer begins here.

I personally am not a big Thor guy, but with Jason Aaron writing this, how can I not check this book out. Jason Aaron is a great writer, pair him with a Thor that is trying to redeem himself and we got maybe the best possibility of Marvel NOW so far.

W&A:Ulises Farinas

Motro #1 - A reclusive young boy with superhuman strength follows a prophecy from his dead father on a mission to save people, but when he finds the area villagers are less than thrilled by his noble intentions and he faces adversaries both human and magical-mechanical, what will it take to fulfill his destiny? Can his miniature talking motorcycle help? From illustrator and intricate world-builder Ulises Farinas (IDW's Judge Dredd), comes the first story in the life and legend of a fantasy hero for the ages.

This seems like a goofy 80's cartoon to me, but if it hits all the nostalgia right it could be a hit. I don't know what to make of this story, are we talking in the same manner of Birthright, which is great, or is this more geared towards kids? This is a pass for me personally.

W: Josh Blaylock W: Matt Merhoff

Mercy Sparx Year One #1 - For years we've known Mercy Sparx as Heaven's secret weapon. A devil working for the good guys, tasked with hunting down and capturing rogue angels hiding on Earth. This is the never told story of her first year on Earth, and even more mysterious beginnings in the forgotten divine realm of SHEOL. Supported by a story in last May's FCBD special Mix Tape 2016 and a nationwide signing tour!

I am assuming that if you are a fan of Mercy Sparx this is for you, but if you aren't this would be a great opportunity to learn the characters back story and origin. 

W&A Terry Moore

Motor Girl #1 - First Issue! When Samantha's junkyard is visited by a UFO looking for spare parts, she is only too happy to oblige. But when word gets out she is a reliable source, Sam's booming alien business catches the attention of an Area 51 investigator determined to shut her down! Don't miss the premier issue of Terry Moore's fantastic new series!

This looks like a goofy, but fun story. Almost like an anti-Men In Black type book and looks to be worth a read through.

W: Robert Mulligan A: Juliya Glagol

 Mulligan #1 - Mulligan, a brilliant chemist with a violent past, must correct his greatest mistake in this sci-fi tale of one man's plot to destroy the monster he helped create, a multi-billion dollar company turning people into fuel.

This one looks like it has some potential, like Godzilla type story. This is a pick up and see book.

Five Must Buys 10/30/16

Hola readers. Another happy Monday and another day fighting awful traffic. It looks to be another great week in comics.  DC is still killing it with Rebirth and I am hoping that Marvel can turn it around with relaunching X-Men soon.  Marvel NOW has not been impressive and if my local store is any indication of how fans feel, Marvel needs to right the ship ASAP. It is funny how DC's comics are killing it and their movies are getting killed and Marvel's movies are killing it and their comics are getting killed.  TV aside from the Netflix shows are not great. Agents of Shield and the whole CWverse want to be good and sometimes they are, but most of the time they are meh. Let us get back to what all these things are based off and what we are excited to read this week.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

W: Zachary Kaplan A: Giovanni Timpano

Eclipse #3 - Not only does Bax get closer to understanding just how the city's mysterious killer avoids burning in the deadly sunlight, but also with Cielo's help, he learns more about the city's secrets and the killer's origins. But will it be enough to help Bax protect her before the killer strikes again?

This has been one of my favorite books that have come out recently.  In a post-apocalyptical world where the sun will burn and kill you, there is a killer that does not burn and is using the sun as his weapon.  This is a book that does not telegraph any of the twists and turns and is a great read.  I can't wait to learn more about the characters and this world.

W: Tom King A: Miel Janin

Batman #10 - 'I am Suicide' part two! Batman now has his team, but are they ready for the most dangerous mission of their lives? As the Dark Knight prepares his squad to infiltrate Santa Prisca, he may find that it's up to him alone to face Bane.

Anything with Bane will have me reading a book. I think that Bane has been so misused since pretty much Knightfall.  King looks like he may be using Bane's brain as well as his strength, which is what makes Bane so great and brings out the best in the Dark Knight. The start of this arc was great and looks to have a lot of potential. With what King did on Vision this may be the start of a great Batman arc.

W: Dan Abnett A: Brad Walker

Aquaman #10 - 'HOUSE OF LIGHT'! Before Mera can marry Aquaman and become the Queen of Atlantis, she must undergo numerous trials to appease the ancient traditions of her adopted homeland. But not everyone in the court of Atlantis is keen to see an outsider ascend to the throne!

This has been the only Aquaman run that has kept my interest this long. It will be interesting if Abnett can keep it going or will fall back into Aquaman that people make fun of. There are a lot of avenues to take with Aquaman since he is basically the only Monarch is the DC world and can pretty much do anything he wants. This aspect never seems to be pursued aside from an evil brother or king of guard trying to overthrow him and take power for themselves. He is also always the outcast in the Justice League and there are a lot of avenues to explore there, trust, teamwork, and being an outcast, which they have touched on.  Hopefully Abnett has some more good stories in him.

The Walking Dead #160 - 'THE WHISPERER WAR': Part 4 - The war rages on.

I mean if you aren't reading The Walking Dead, I don't know what else to say. The Whisper War has been good so far and I love the use of Negan.  There are a multitude of ways that this could end and I can't wait to see where it goes. Sometimes I almost feel like there should be a spin off with Negan and his establishing a new saviors group. However, if Kirkman was to do that, I think he would do it in The Walking Dead fashion where he kills Rick off and takes the group over. I don't see that happening, but with Kirkman anything is possible.  That is the joy of this book.

W:Jeff Lemire A: Charles Soule

Death Of X #3 - Cyclops and Emma Frost start to hatch their plan. The Inhumans cross a line with the mutants.

This event makes me a little sad because it basically got rid of the X-Men in the current timeline. However, with the new announcements of all the X books coming back. I can't wait to see how where this goes and how it turns out. They are bringing back Blue and Gold teams so this has to lead somewhere good.

What up brochachos.  Happy new comic book day.  As always there are some incredible covers, but I have chosen the best of the best this week. Marvel's Hip Hop covers are still going, but they are getting to some pretty obscure covers. I try and keep the sexy covers down to a minimum, otherwise would have included the Cammy Street Fighter cover, but Paul Green is on point. The Flash swipe is awesome and I can't wait to read this issue.  The Punisher Annual has a great Halloween themed issue and terrifying, yet incredible cover.

New No. 1's 10/25/16

Hola Muchachos. There are quite a few new books coming out this week. Some look really good some look like a cheesy 80s movie that could surprise us. With DC staggering their launch of Rebirth, new books are still coming out almost 4 months later.  Marvel is also staggering their relaunch, but seems to have launched with some of their weaker titles.  Also, since Civil War is behind/delayed, the Infamous Iron Man book that came out last week ruined the ending of Civil War.  It killed the little bit of interest I had in finishing that series.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

W: Dan Jurgens A: Bernard Chang

Batman Beyond #1 - 'THE RETURN' part one! Terry McGinnis is back as Batman, much to the delight of his family and friends. But is the original Joker really back as well? Inspired by the possible return of their role model, the Jokerz have taken over an entire section of Gotham City and are determined to wreak havoc in the still-rebuilding city. While Batman battles chaos on the streets, his friend Dana is at the mercy of the new leader of the now-unified gang.

Batman Beyond and Terry McGinnis have long been one of my favorite characters in the DC Universe.  With Terry back in the suit and the possible return of a villain long thought dead, this series is off to a great start.  The Rebirth issue was a great jumping on point of what has potential to be a great run.

W: Justin Jordan A: Jonathan Wayshak

Call of Duty Zombies #1 - Waves of zombies just keep coming, first in the Call of Duty: Zombies games, and now from Dark Horse Comics! Join Stuhlinger, Misty, Russman, and Marlton as they fight for survival against the undead horde. The Tranzit crew, last seen in the 'Buried' map, are trapped on a deeply unstable and fractured future Earth. The Call of Duty: Zombies miniseries delves into these characters' backstories, providing a crucial piece of the Zombies puzzle. See what happens between the maps as the Tranzit crew fights to escape Maxis's apocalyptic wasteland.

This book could be really interesting.  I used to play COD all the time and loved the Zombie mode.  Throw in a good story and this could be a fun book. I am a fan of books that are based on games that I have played and enjoyed, but they seem to be pretty hit or miss.

W: Ben Percy A:Jonboy Meyers

Teen Titans #1 - 'Damian Knows Best' part one! Now that Damian has 'summoned' the Teen Titans, the tyrannical teen reveals his master plan! But a great evil from Damian's past is lurking around the corner, ready to strike at the team's newest leader and destroy the new Teen Titans before they even begin.

The setup in the Rebirth issue was great.  How the team was formed was inventive and fun while introducing us to the team. Teen Titans has never really called my name, but with Damian in charge, this seems like a book that I might be able to get behind.

W: Gary Phillips A: Elena Casagrande

Vigilante Southland #1 - Donny was feeling pretty settled in his cushy life. Even though his girlfriend was politically active, he never gave social justice or racial issues any time. So, when Dorrie discovers something she shouldn't have and ends up dead, no one expects Donny to be the guy to carry on her work, but that's exactly what he does, putting on a mask and taking to the streets. He soon finds himself tangled in family history, political conspiracy, and a plot that goes far deeper than he ever imagined. Set in the heart of Los Angeles, this new VIGILANTE series raises an old question while making it relevant to our times: when you witness bad things being done, how far would you go to set them right? Written by Gary Phillips, noted writer of the Ivan Monk series of novels, and drawn by Elena Casagrande (Suicide Risk), this hard-hitting tale of revenge and redemption takes the Vigilante into a whole new danger zone.

Political thriller trapped in a comic book. Sounds right up my alley after I got passed the names of Donnie and Dorrie. This reminds me of a V for Vendetta mixed with The Pelican Brief.  It seems like it could be a good commentary on todays world, with everything going on in todays world. I am assuming that if you want your politics and comics separate that this book is not for you.

W: Max Marks A:Arcana Studios

Wolfcop #1 - Ever since hard-drinking local Woodhaven police officer Lou Garou had a late-night bender and stumbled onto dark magic, his life has been turned upside down. Now he moonlights as WolfCop, a rage-fueled, bourbon-swilling, magnum-toting, rabid warrior for justice! WOLFCOP #1 sees everyone's favorite alcoholic lycanthropic lawman tearing out of the big screen and onto these gorgeous pages to fight bigger, badder, and meaner monsters than anything that has threatened Woodhaven before!

I don't know what to say about this other than it seems like an 80s B movie that would star Eric Roberts or something. As I reread the solicit, I guess it was a movie that came out in 2014? I would assume a straight to DVD release? Apparently the movie was so good it needed a comic book sequel.

W: Robbie Thompson A: Javier Rodriguez

Doctor Strange And The Sorcerers Supreme #1 - An ancient evil threatens to unravel the fabric of reality, and one Sorcerer Supreme may not be enough. Doctor Strange must unite past, present and future Sorcerers Supremes to stem the coming darkness: Merlin, the Ancient One, Wiccan, and more! But Strange should watch his back, not all of these Sorcerers have his best interests in mind.

I couldn't tell if this is a new ongoing or a mini-series. Either way the new movie is coming out and they are going to be pushing him hard while the spotlight is on him. The Doctor Strange regular ongoing has been great and would expect this to continue in that vein.

W: Sean Ryan A: Jamal Campbell

Prowler #1 - CLONE CONSPIRACY' TIE-IN! Even a super hero's life can get boring. Double-check your gear. Patrol the city. Save the innocent. Report back to your boss, The Jackal. Wait, what? Why is Prowler working for The Jackal? What does the resurrected Madame Web have to do with him? And what has Prowler already done that may have compromised him?!

The Clone Conspiracy has been off to a great start. Although, this book may have a one page tie-in, which seems to happen to boost sales. Either way another Spider book can't hurt.  This seems to be Marvel's strongest property right now.

W: Tim Howard A: Devaki Neogi

Skeptics #1 - A stylish, political adventure about a pair of hip, clever teens who fool the world into believing they have superpowers. It is the 1960s. The Russians have the A-bomb, the H-bomb, and now the most terrifying weapon of all: a pair of psychically superpowered young people. Terrified and desperate, the US top brass scours from coast to coast in search of psychic Americans. Enter Dr. Isobel Santaclara, an eccentric illusionist and grifter who has recruited two teenagers and trained them to trick the US government, the Russians, and the whole world into believing they are dangerous psychics. The Skeptics is a pre-punk period piece, a sort of honest, unfuzzy, non-nostalgic look at the Cold War in DC.

This is another Black Mask book that has potential, if they could get past issue one. It is so bizarre, there have been many great books launched, including 4 Kids Walk Into A Bank, that had a great reception and then are never followed up on. The concept seems pretty cool, but lets see how long it lasts.

This is another concept that seems great. However, I was unable to tell whether this was an ongoing or a mini series. Bloodshot is awesome and Valiant has some great books out right now., so I am expecting great things from this book.  With Jeff Lemire at the helm I don't see how I can be disappointed.

5 Must Buys 10/26/16

Hola nerdmigos, happy Monday. This week has a lot of good books coming out, a lot, a lot.  To keep it to five books, I had to cut Flash and The Titans, which I have been greatly enjoying. I also had to cut Birthright and Decender.  It is very interesting that the Clone Conspiracy, which has been very good thus far, is tying into Prowler #1.  I can't tell if it will make people mad and quit the Clone Conspiracy or that it will make people that wouldn't have bought it buy it. Aside from Star Wars and Punisher Marvel had a meh week this week. 

BOOK OF THE WEEK

W: James Tynion IV A: Alvaro Martinez

Detective Comics #943 - THE VICTIM SYNDICATE' part one! Batman can't save everyone; innocent people sometimes fall in the war against evil that he's declared in Gotham. But what happens when those victims start to fight back, and they don't only blame the criminals who shattered their lives? Batman's never faced an enemy like this, and his team may find themselves questioning everything they know about what heroes do!

This has been my favorite book that has been launched out of Rebirth, minus the Monsterman crossover, which was good, but not great. Tynion has a knack for writing Batman and finds his voice with ease. SPOILER*****I saw that a lot of people were really excited when they "killed" off Tim Drake saying that he was the worst Robin ever, but I don't get all the Red Robin hate. I can't wait until they explore this team a little more and LOVE, the inclusion of Clayface as a good guy.  There is so much potential there. This has been the better of the Bat books so far.

W: Christopher Priest A:Joe Bennett

Deathstroke #5 -  'The Professional' part five! After Slade kidnaps Damian and leaves Rose in the care of Batman, the World's Greatest Assassin and the World's Greatest Detective trade partners in a battle of wills!

This has been one of the best Deathstroke stories that I have ever read, as well as being one of the best Rebirth titles. I have never read anything by Priest before, but have heard good things. Reading Deathstroke, I can see why he is held in such great regard. Deathstroke is very easy to mess up, writing about him killing people with no real substance to his character.  Priest does a great job of exploring who Deathstroke is while still letting him kick @$$.

W: Joshua WIlliamson A: Jason Shawn Alexander

Frostbite #2 - The start of their journey did not go exactly as planned, but Keaton made a deal to get Vic to Alcatraz safely, and nothing will dissuade her from carrying out her contract. With their main transport knocked out, and roving gangs looking to block their path, Keaton and crew are going to have to get clever if they're going to stay alive

This book surprised the hell out of me. It was really good and there was a turn that I didn't see coming. I can't wait to see where this book goes.  It reminded me of the Book Of Eli movie mixed with Maze Runner book series for some reason. Williamson is great at world building and hooking the reader with an intriguing premise mixed with dark and real world characters. I can't believe how many good books he is currently writing. This is a book that you should be jumping on early.

W: Robert Kirkman A: Paul Azaceta

This book is so dark and disturbing, that it makes me worry a little bit about Robert Kirkman.  What kind of messed up thoughts are in his head to make him think of this dark stuff. However, I am very grateful because this book is amazing and addicting. This is one of the books that every time a new arc starts I go back and read the previous arc in one sitting. It makes the book much more enjoyable and I have caught things that I missed on the first read. Deep dark and compelling. This is a must read.

So far, this has been my favorite Valiant story for awhile. At least until the Kommander Bloodshot comes out.  The preview for that looks amazing, but that may be because I love the original Red Dawn. Anyways, this book has a mysterious intrigue that makes me very impatient to see what is going to happen.
