New No. 1's 11/15/16

What up nerdmigos.  Happy Tuesday.  Another week of new comics.  So I am going to do something a little bit different this week. I am going to rate these titles with a with a Can't Wait, Worth Checking Out, Maybe if it is a light week, Nah. DC is still rolling out Young Animal and some Rebirth stuff starting next year, but I think they may be done with number ones for a while.  Marvel is still rolling out Marvel NOW and again is starting with some odd ball titles, like Fool Killer. 

Everything I have read and heard is that people want Mutants not Inhumans, the new Champions book that is supposed to be the future of Marvel, is lacking major interest and sales have been poor, and finally the change of all the original characters being changed to be more diversified have turned people away from their favorite books. I don't know if that is just is San Diego, but from what I read on message boards, I think not. Hopefully they can get their act together because that have a plethora of great backstories and characters and changing them to diversify is not the answer.  Introduce new characters and grow a new fan base, don't shove it down fans throats because that is how you lose fans.  This reminds me of the end of the New 52, I was down to Bat books and Justice League and buying mostly Marvel.  Now, I am buying mostly DC and just Spiderbooks and a couple holdovers not related to Civil War II. Rant over.  Here we go, new books this week.

W: Matt Kindt A: David Rubin

Ether #1 - A science-minded adventurer gets mixed up in the mysteries of a fantasy world in this charming new adventure from an award-winning creative team. Boone Dias is an interdimensional explorer, a scientist from Earth who has stumbled into great responsibility. He's got an explanation for everything, so of course the Ether's magical residents turn to him to solve their toughest crimes. But maybe keeping the real and the abstract separate is too big a job for just one man.
From "New York Times" best-selling author Matt Kindt (MIND MGMT, Past Aways, Super Spy, Dept. H). Stunning artwork from David Rubfn!

Worth Checking out- I am a Matt Kindt fan and science mixed with magic mixed with interdimensional travel sounds like fun. Throw in a crime element and this sounds like an interesting read with a lot of potential.

W: James Robinson A:Tom Feister

Grand Passion #1 - One of the comic industry's finest - James Robinson (Squadron Supreme, Scarlet Witch, Starman) - delivers the surprising, funny, violent, and sexy tale of romance that comics have been missing! Doc's a cop. Mabel's a crook. They're two wayward souls, fated to fall in love at first sight, even as Mabel swears to kill Doc if it's the last thing she does. Its Harlequin Romance meets Hard-Boiled Crime, as only James Robinson could deliver!

Maybe - Romance comics are really not for me, but reminds me of Sex Criminals, which makes it a maybe. This seems like a tricky one to get right.  Very few can, like The Fix, dark funny crime, or Sex Criminals, Crime Romance, but mixing all of them together will be difficult, but if done right can be great.

W: Amit Chauhan A: Eli Powell

Yakuza Demon Killers #1 - Tokyo harbors a dark secret! When a museum heist goes wrong, a damaged thief named Ochita becomes trapped in the middle of a battle between a horde of demons and the merciless Yakuza. No matter who wins, humanity loses.

Maybe - On name alone this gets a maybe. The Yakuza mixed with demons, sounds a little wacky, but could have great potential.

W: Jeff Lemire A: Mike Deodato

Thanos #1 - EVIL HAS BEEN UNLEASHED ON THE UNIVERSE. Thanos, possibly the most evil individual in the Marvel Universe, is back, and he's out for vengeance on all who would oppose him. Unfortunately for the Mad Titan, he's also heading for an unexpected reckoning, with his family. Take an ongoing walk on the dark side of the galaxy, following the deadly trail of destruction left in the wake of... THANOS!

Maybe - This one gets a maybe only because Jeff Lemire is writing this.  Thanos has really never been my thing.  He seems overpowered and a little one dimensional as in evil just to be evil. Sometimes it takes every hero in the Marvel universe to stop him.  How do you make a book interesting about him?  We shall see.

W: Pamela Ribon A: Veronica Fish

Slam #1 - Television Without Pity's Pamela Ribon (Rick and Morty) and artist Veronica Fish (Archie) dive into the fast-paced, hard-hitting world of roller derby! Jennifer Chu and Maise Huff (aka Knockout and Ithinka Can on the track) have been best friends since their first day of Fresh Meat Orientation for the Eastside Roller Girls, but when they get drafted for two different teams they'll have to figure out if the bond between them is stronger than the pull of a team when a win is on the line. You get slammed on the track and slammed in life, and in both cases you have to take your hits and get back up again!

Nah - Roller Derby and Roller Girls have never really interested me.  However, I thought the same thing with Paper Girls and that was worth a read.  So who knows.

Harbinger Renegades #1 - Six months ago, a secret team of renegade whistleblowers leaked the existence of these extraordinarily dangerous individuals to a stunned world. Today, all across the country, crude, DIY psiot activation attempts have left hundreds brain damaged, or worse. The emergence of a new psiot in a community often leads to riots and mass violence. Maybe - Valiant is very hit or miss for me.  This is a team up book with characters that I like and characters that I don't really care for.  This is a little reminiscent of Generation Zero. That is the only reason I will give this a chance.  

W: George Mann A: Alan Quah

Dark Souls Winters Spite #1 - Beyond this tenuous fabric lies a place of banishment; a world within a world where the frigid nights endure and even the Old Lords fear to tread. Only the deluded dare venture there, yet in these times of misery, sometimes madness is our only path toward salvation.

Nah - Video game comics are typically not good unless you are a fan of the game.  There are a few exceptions, but with no knowledge of the Dark Souls universe, this seems like a pass for me.

Five Must Buys 11/14/16

What up brochachos. This week there are too many good books coming out.  I had to cut Moonshine, which I loved and Batman, which features one of my all time favorite villains in Bane. I also had to cut the Green Lanterns book which I have enjoyed, especially this new story line of a ring that can be worn by anyone. DC has been killing it with Rebirth, but they didn't make it into the top five this week. Over at Marvel none of the Spider-Man stuff made it either. It is a brutal week on wallets, but this is the week of independents. So here we go.

 BOOK OF THE WEEK

W: Ed Brubaker W: Sean Phillips

Kill or Be Killed #4 - The shocking end to the first arc, as Dylan's secret collides with his home life. BRUBAKER & PHILLIPS's new series keeps the hits coming, and remember, each issue includes fantastic back page extras and articles.

This book has been my favorite book that I have read all year.  This story is so dark and twisted yet fascinating in a way that you can't stop reading and you can't wait to see what happens. Initially I thought that the twist was going to be that the guy is just crazy and there is no supernatural element to it, but I no longer think that. This is a must read for anyone.

W: Brian Wood A: Mack Chater

Briggs Land #4 - Caleb Briggs, Grace's eldest son and a member of the white power movement, attempts to intimidate a local business owner into selling. When that fails, he calls in the troops. Meanwhile, Grace continues to work to isolate her husband from the family business and the big fracking concern interested in Briggs Land.

This book reminds me a little bit of Sheltered, which I really enjoyed.  An interesting dynamic is formed here between how Briggs Land was run and how Grace would like to run it now. She has shown herself to be a capable leader, but does have her own sense of justice and that is not as harsh as it was, which may lead to her downfall or at least lead to problems down the road. With her sons behind her she should be able to keep the Briggs Land train chugging along, but lets she what old man in charge has to say about that.

W: Joelle Jones A: Joelle Jones

Lady Killer 2 #3 - Life in Florida gets a little twisted for Josie when she learns about the dark past of her mother-in-law and the connection to her new partner.

This is another fantastic book, whereas this one is dark it is splashed with a slight humor as well. Set in the 60's where this housewife is secretly one of the best hired killers money can buy. This book shows perfectly the problems of trying to balance a home life with a secret life. If you like James Bond or Mad Men this is a book that you need to catch up on.

W: Mark Millar A: Greg Capullo

Reborn #2 - MILLAR and CAPULLO's epic sci-fi fantasy story continues. After her death, Bonnie is reborn in Adystria and has a sword thrust into her hand. As the evils within the Dark Lands get stronger, she is Adystria's only hope: their savior.

The first issue was amazing with a ton of world building and endless possibilities.  Capullo is great and I could have swore I saw Bruce Wayne's twin in the first issue. Millar with Capullo is a great combo that I never knew I wanted. 

W: Jeff Lemire A: Andrea Sorrentino

Old Man Logan #13 - THE FINAL CHAPTER OF 'THE LAST RONIN' Confronted by his past and the horrors that he has faced, can LOGAN ever hope to be truly free of the WASTELANDS? Will MAUREEN forgive him if she learns the truth of who Logan used to be? Will the Silent Order succeed in their goals? Find out in 'The Last Ronin' Part Five: The Wolverine.

This has been my favorite book at Marvel since it has been launched.  I love the dark violent nature of this Wolverine and how it expands on the past of the original Old Man Logan story or I guess it could be considered the future, but you know what I mean.

New No. 1's 11/09/16

What up Muchachos. This week there are 7 new books out worth mentioning, which is a huge relief after all the big weeks we have been having. DC's Young Animal line has not been for me but it seems that some people are enjoying it. A little too strange for my tastes. Marvel continues to roll out it's Marvel NOW books, which hopefully will get better because the first couple of waves from NOW have been meh, and if you are to believe message boards and sales numbers of the local comic book stores, NOW is DOA. Hopefully Marvel will turn it around soon.  It isn't a matter of if, it is just a matter of when. DC and Marvel take turns at the top with Image cutting a nice little piece for themselves. So here we go with the new books.

W: Jody Houser A: Tommy Lee Edwards
Mother Panic #1 - Meet Violet Paige, a celebutante with a bad attitude and a temper to match, who no one suspects of having anything lying beneath the surface of her outrageous exploits. As I have said before, these books are a little too out there for me. I will definitely give it a shot. The Young Animal books have all had intriguing previews. Maybe this will be the book to catch for me.

Since the last Batman and Turtles crossover, I couldn't wait for more.  The last one was the greatest book that I didn't know I wanted. It seemed like an odd crossover that was a gimmick to sell more books.  However, it turned out to be a great story that I wanted more of.  Hopefully this crossover will continue along those lines and meet the high expectations that we have come to expect.

W: Frank J. Barbiere A: Victor Santos
Violent Love #1 - American Southwest. And then they fell in love. Join FRANK J. BARBIERE (FIVE GHOSTS, The Revisionist) and VICTOR SANTOS (THE MICE TEMPLAR, Polar) for a pulp-infused criminal romance oozing with style and action! Double-sized debut issue!

Double sized issue from Image, count me in.  The last double sized image book that comes to mind is Monstress, which has blown me away.  I am taking this as a Bonnie and Clyde type story that could have some potential. Based on the clothes I am thinking Lady Killer mixed with Fade Out, which were both great time pieces.

W: Gerry Conway A: Ryan Stegman
Amazing Spider-Man Renew Your Vows #1 - The Parker family is web-slinging and wall-crawling their way into your hearts and into comic shops later this year! Life is good for Peter Parker and Mary Jane; their daughter Annie is their pride and joy, they're both working and (barely) making ends meet, they're keeping the streets of New York City safe from super villains, you know, normal family stuff. Oh, did we mention MJ and Annie have Spider-Powers... just like Peter?! Being Spider-Man just became a family affair.

This seems like a no brainer if you are a Spider-Man fan.  It seems like a lot of people have been waiting for this book.  The expectations are high and Conway better bring it. Now that X-Men have been ruined and banished to the corner of the Marvel Universe Spider-Man has taken their spot as my top interest in Marvel.

W: Ta-Nehisi Coates W: Alitha Martinez - Afua Richardson
Black Panther World Of Wakanda #1 - 'YOU DESERVED SO MUCH MORE, LITTLE FLOWER. YOU DESERVED A WAKANDA THAT CHERISHED YOU.' Writer ROXANE GAY (Bad Feminst, Hunger) spins a Wakandan love story, its tenderness matched only by its brutality. I have always liked the Black Panther and am hoping that this is an expanding view of Wakanda and Black Panther. It seems odd that they are pitching this as a love story, but sounds like it has potential.

W: Brian Michael Bendis A: Stefano Caselli
Invincible Iron Man #1 - From the violent streets of Chicago, a new armored hero rises! Clad in her very own Iron Man armor, Riri Williams is ready to show the Marvel Universe what she can do as the self-made hero of tomorrow. But is she ready for all the problems that come with stepping into Iron Man's jet boots? Where's a genius billionaire playboy philanthropist when you need one?

Everyone seems to have an opinion on this new Iron Man and it seems to be split between love and hate, at least online it does.  In the stores people seem to be very meh about this new character and her taking over as Iron Man.  I fall into the meh category. Wallet wise, it makes it a lot easier to cut as my pull list is over flowing with books right now. I have no attachment to this character and have more than enough to read so it is an easy cut.

W: Steve Orlando A: Jakub Rebelka
Namesake #1 - Steve Orlando (Midnighter, Virgil) brings us his only original series of 2016, a gripping story about the nature of identity. Once every seven years, Earth overlaps with Ektae, a world where alchemy is not pseudo-science but the driving force of industry. For seven days, Ektae breaches our world, bringing dirty magic and ideas. Jordan Molossus was born of Earth and Ektae and abandoned by both, but when he receives two cast iron urns containing his estranged fathers' ashes, he'll leave everything behind to put his parents to rest before Ektae disappears for another seven years.

The concept of Alchemy has always fascinated me, ever since Full Metal Alchemist and Alchemist the rapper. The fact that this overlaps with Earth and non alchemic people every seven years is a nice twist and has potential.

5 Must Buys 11/9/16

What up fellas.  Happy Monday.  Hopefully you guys got an extra hour of sleep with the time change. Unfortunately, it will now be dark on the way home from work now.  Looks like a lot of good books are coming out this week. Marvel is in the midst of their newest re-launch and DC continues with Rebirth.  Detective Comics and Flash are both strongly recommended, but didn't make the list this week. 

All-Star Batman #4 - 'My Own Worst Enemy' part four! So close and yet so far from his goal, Batman must now wrangle Two-Face out of his own assassin-filled riverboat casino before it plunges over Niagara Falls to their deaths! The Dark Knight will have to go all-in on the most deadly gamble of his life if he intends to make it out alive.

This has been my favorite Bat book stemming from the Rebirth, even though this isn't a Rebirth title. It almost feels like Quentin Tarantino decided to write a Batman comic book. It is action packed, very Dark and the KGBeast part was extremely graphic, but freaking amazing. This is definatly a book that beats to it's own drum.

Deathstroke #6 - The Professional' part six! Deathstroke's honor is put to the test when he must help a tyrannical despot - Ja Zaki, a.k.a. The Red Lion - stop a civil war that he inadvertently caused. Plus: Enter Jericho!

This book was a surprise for me. I like Deathstroke, but his books, a lot like Punisher end up being no story and just fighting/killing scenes. However, this book has started out with a great story and I am very excited to see where this goes. It has probably been the best solo Deathstroke book that I have read.

Glitterbomb #3 - 'I GAVE HIM A PIECE OF MY MIND...' Fan favorite JIM ZUB (WAYWARD, Thunderbolts) and newcomer DJIBRIL MORISSETTE-PHAN tear into the heart of Hollywood in GLITTERBOMB, a dramatic horror story about fame and failure.

This book took me by surprise. I almost didn't buy it, but was sure glad I did.  This is a dark tale where I don't consider the protagonist a bad person even though she does bad things. It seems like for the most part, people are getting what they deserved.  Please don't get me wrong killing is always wrong, but this is just entertainment.

Clone Conspiracy #2 -  The surprises keep coming in the SPIDER-MAN EVENT OF THE YEAR!Doc Ock is back and it's time for him and the Amazing Spider-Man to throw down! What lurks in the Underground?!

This has been the best Spider-man story in quite a long time.  Hopefully this wont get too crazy and convoluted, but so far so good.  This also has a chance to bring back Ben Reiley or Kaine as the Scarlet Spider, which I am very excited for. The other reason a lot of people have been excited for this is that Del Otto is doing the covers of this series and man, people love him.

Cannibal #2 - The second chapter from "New York Times" bestselling writer BRIAN BUCCELLATO & JENNIFER YOUNG. As the Hansen family reels from tragedy, Cash resorts to drastic measures in search of answers.

This is another book that is new, but has a lot of potential. This is a fresh take on zombies, but not really zombies.  I don't want to ruin it for anyone, but if you are a horror fan, this is a must check out.

Welcome back.  Here it is, the best day of the week, Wednesday, where all the new books come out and we have our entertainment for the week. As always there is a ton of great stuff coming out today. Here I point out the best covers that are coming out today. I know there are some people that buy books just for cover art or variants wouldn't be so popular.  I admit I am guilty of this, but there are always some really cool covers. The best is when they put grade A art on the covers of the regular book so you aren't spending a ton on a variant or pining for a cover that is way out of your price range. New No. 1's 11/2/16

What up muchahcos. Hope you guys had a great Halloween. This is a first time in a long time that there is nothing new from DC. They have a Catwoman Election Special, but that is a one shot. So we are now entering the Marvel NOW relaunch.  It is very odd how they are pushing some ancillary characters as part of their big launch like Prowler or this weeks Footkiller. I am hoping that they can turn it around soon. It almost feels like the height of the new 52 where I was picking up Batman and almost nothing else DC, but mostly Marvel just switched. I am only really enjoying the Spiderman books as well as Vision, which just ended, Moon Knight, Punisher and Doctor Strange. I can't wait for the X books that are slated to come out in the beginning of next year. So here we are the new books for this week.

 

W: Alex De Campi A: Tony Parker

Mayday #1 - A Cold War action-thriller like no other. It's 1971, and two young Soviet operatives are sent to California to kill a defector and recover top-secret information. If you read my posts, you know that I love Soviet spy books or alternative history Red Dawn type books. WOLVERINES! This one sounds like almost like that show the Americans, which I also enjoyed. I can't wait to read this one because the potential is there.

W: Mark Waid A: Mike Del Mundo

Avengers #1 - The time has come! Their ranks shattered by Civil War, their spirits weighted down by a toll both personal and spiritual, Earth's Mightiest Heroes must find the resolve to stand united one final time against their greatest foe! Captain America! Thor! The Vision! The Wasp! Spider-Man! Hercules! When the dust settles, not a one of these valiant heroes will make it to the final page alive! This is KANG WAR ONE.

What can I say about the Avengers that hasn't been said. This looks like a nice jumping on point and hopefully the return to relevance for Marvel.  What excites me for this book is that Mark Waid is writing it.

W: Max Bemis A: Dailbor Talajic

Footkiller #1 - Greg Salinger was just your typical merc for hire - FOOLKILLER - killing those that he deemed to be 'foolish.' And for money. But that life is behind him now. Today, he's a psychiatrist, trying to help others. But now S.H.I.E.L.D. wants him to try to rehabilitate super villains. The catch? If these 'patients' don't make enough progress, they're dead!

Again, just an odd choice as part of the new Marvel line up. An odd premise that sounds like, yeah that might be interesting. A $3.99 price point on this book is a maybe I will get this, but most likely not. 

W:David Walker A: Carlos Pacheco 

Occupy Avengers #1 - Super heroes, they're a privileged class. Doing what they want, when they want and suffering no consequences. They have no regard for the ordinary people who are left behind to suffer in their wake. Who will stand up for the little guy? There is a man. If you can find him, and if he believes in your story, he and his friends will put things right. Some call them outlaws, rebels, Robin Hoods. To others, they are heroes. No powers to speak of - just skills, smarts and a burning drive to do the right thing. His name is Hawkeye. Occupy Avengers: It's time to 'Take Back Justice'!

I have loved Hawkeye ever since Matt Fraction David Aja did Hawk-Guy. It was the best archer story I have ever read.  I hope this bring Hawkeye back into the spotlight with some good stories about a non super powered hero.

W: Jason Aaron A: Olivier Coipel

Unworthy Thor #1 - Odinson's desperate search to regain his worthiness has taken him out into the cosmos, where he's learned of the existence of a mysterious other Mjolnir. This weapon of unimaginable power, a relic from a dead universe, is the key to Odinson's redemption, but some of the greatest villains of the Marvel Universe are now anxious to get their hands on it as well. Can The Odinson reclaim his honor, or will the power of thunder be wielded for evil? The quest for the hammer begins here.

I personally am not a big Thor guy, but with Jason Aaron writing this, how can I not check this book out. Jason Aaron is a great writer, pair him with a Thor that is trying to redeem himself and we got maybe the best possibility of Marvel NOW so far.

W&A:Ulises Farinas

Motro #1 - A reclusive young boy with superhuman strength follows a prophecy from his dead father on a mission to save people, but when he finds the area villagers are less than thrilled by his noble intentions and he faces adversaries both human and magical-mechanical, what will it take to fulfill his destiny? Can his miniature talking motorcycle help? From illustrator and intricate world-builder Ulises Farinas (IDW's Judge Dredd), comes the first story in the life and legend of a fantasy hero for the ages.

This seems like a goofy 80's cartoon to me, but if it hits all the nostalgia right it could be a hit. I don't know what to make of this story, are we talking in the same manner of Birthright, which is great, or is this more geared towards kids? This is a pass for me personally.

W: Josh Blaylock W: Matt Merhoff

Mercy Sparx Year One #1 - For years we've known Mercy Sparx as Heaven's secret weapon. A devil working for the good guys, tasked with hunting down and capturing rogue angels hiding on Earth. This is the never told story of her first year on Earth, and even more mysterious beginnings in the forgotten divine realm of SHEOL. Supported by a story in last May's FCBD special Mix Tape 2016 and a nationwide signing tour!

I am assuming that if you are a fan of Mercy Sparx this is for you, but if you aren't this would be a great opportunity to learn the characters back story and origin. 

W&A Terry Moore

This looks like a goofy, but fun story. Almost like an anti-Men In Black type book and looks to be worth a read through.

This one looks like it has some potential, like Godzilla type story. This is a pick up and see book.
